Sophie Furgal Kowalewicz
February 13, 1939 – October 25, 2025

Sophie Furgal Kowalewicz, age 86, of Niles, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 25, 2025. She was the beloved wife of the late Jan Kowalewicz, with whom she shared an inseparable 62-year marriage filled with devotion, deep faith in God, and enduring love for family. Loving mother of Alice (Marion) Madeja, Theresa (the late Stanley) Stoklosa, and John (Tammie) Kowalewicz. Cherished grandmother of Steven (Renee) Stoklosa, Robert (Kasia) Madeja, Kristina (Chris) Mulligan, Ela Stoklosa, Michelle Madeja, Matthew (Emily) Stoklosa, Danielle (Cole) Carr, Andrea (Benjamin) Guzek and Nicole Kowalewicz; and treasured great-grandmother of Josephine, Theo, Natalia, Alex, Sophie, Kate, Luke, Gabriel and baby girl Carr on the way.

Sophie's life began on Feb 13 1939 in Weteranowka Poland, where she endured unimaginable hardship as a child when her family was deported to Siberia in a cattle car in 1940 during the Soviet occupation of eastern Poland. Throughout the war, the family moved to Iran, Iraq, Uganda, England following her father's decision to join the Army of General Wladyslaw Anders. Eventually, her journey led to Chicago, where fate introduced her to Jan, the love of her life. From the moment they met at a dance, Sophie and Jan became inseparable and married 6 months later.

Together, they built a warm and welcoming home that became the heart of countless family gatherings and celebrations. Sophie loved hosting, entertaining, and creating joy through her cooking, hospitality, and laughter. She also shared with Jan a deep love of pilgrimage group travel, exploring destinations across the United States and abroad, always hand in hand.

Sophie will be remembered for her determination  and remarkable strength—a woman who faced adversity early in life and lived every day with unwavering spirit and faith.

Zofia Furgal Kowalewicz 13 lutego 1939 – 25 października 2025

Zofia Furgal Kowalewicz, lat 86, z Niles, Illinois, odeszła spokojnie w sobotę, 25 października 2025 roku. Była ukochaną żoną zmarłego Jana Kowalewicza, z którym przeżyła nierozerwalne 62-letnie małżeństwo pełne oddania, głębokiej wiary w Boga i nieustającej miłości do rodziny.

Zofia uwielbiała gościć, bawić i sprawiać radość poprzez gotowanie, gościnność i śmiech.
