Kirk Daniel
Steinhaus
Mar 19, 1953 — Dec 27, 2023
Kirk Daniel Steinhaus passed away on December 27, 2023 in Glenview, Illinois. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 19, 1953 to a family of musicians. Kirk's affinity for music ran deep, which made it easy for him to carry on the family legacy and learned to play the piano, trumpet, french horn, and clarinet. Kirk studied Political Science at DePaul University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1982, lending to his love of history, politics, and culture.
A lifelong historian, Kirk was a member of the Titanic Historical Society. Kirk and his late wife, Hilary, were also close friends with the youngest titanic survivor for more than 20 years. His devoted studies surrounding the Titanic, World War II, and the evolution of comedy throughout the 20th century were his favorite subjects, second only to his prized MGB convertible. His love for cars stemmed from working as a mechanic in a garage in his twenties. Kirk also worked for the Chicago Sun-Times for nine years, acting as the Administrative Services Supervisor in the Accounting Department. Before retiring, Kirk was a Program Assistant in Senior Services for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago for 25 years.
He is loved and survived by daughter, Margo Steinhaus, son, Torey Steinhaus, cousins, and many beloved friends. Much like his wife, he cherished his pets and accepted the humble title of Saint Francis/cat whisperer. Of the countless cats Kirk interacted with throughout his life, he leaves behind Charlie and Minnie, both of whom showered him with affection and vice versa.
Kirk's life will be celebrated with a wake and visitation at Skaja Funeral Home 7812 N. Milwaukee Ave. Niles from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on January 2nd, 2024. The wake will be followed by a three-day shiva at the residence of family friends in Northbrook. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider donating to the wake and shiva by Venmo (@randi-shivaladies) or Zelle (773-742-2702) and putting Steinhaus in the notes.
