Ethel M.
Vaughn
Aug 2, 1928 — Jun 5, 2026
Morton Grove,Illinois
Ethel Vaughn (nee Rintz), longtime resident of Niles, died on June 5 at age 97 in hospice care. She was the wife of the late Robert, mother of Michael (Judy,) Patricia (Scott Thompson,) Martin (Karen,) Virginia, the late Gregory (Amy,) and William. She was a grandmother of 10, great-grandmother of 17, and great-great grandmother of 5. Visitation will be On June 10th at St. John Brebeuf Church, 8307 N. Harlem Ave., Niles, from 10:00 AM followed by Mass at 11:00AM.
Ethel was a proud graduate of St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1949. She was known for her child-rearing advice as originator of Mrs. Vaughn's Rule (never wake up a sleeping baby.) She liked sewing and was good at it; she even sewed Vogue patterns. She cooked Thanksgiving turkey in a paper bag tavern-style, and her stuffing recipe is a family heirloom. Her habit of always dressing well got her selected out of the audience line for the Phil Donahue Show, and seated front and center, where Donahue pulled her into the act on air. She hated going to the gas station, and was described by her son as suffering from Arcophobia. She will be missed by many. You can stop worrying now, Mom.
