Chae was born in Chung Nam South Korea, where she went to high school and then studied to be a nurse's aide.

In 1983 she came to America, she moved around to several cities before settling in Chicago. In 1986 while visiting friends in Kansas, Chae met her husband John. She returned to Chicago and he followed, and in 1989 they were married, and enjoyed over 36 years together.

Chae enjoyed many things, including flowers, gardening, knitting, bowling, walks traveling, eating out, and spending time with her family.

Chae was from of a family of five children, she was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, and a daughter Kimberly; She is survived by her husband John O'Keefe and her children Julia, David, and Brian.
